The Masked Reader - Reveal!

The moment you have been waiting for! This Masked Reader Reveal video will be launched at 9am on Friday 19th March!

How to enter the World Book Day Children's Competition

On Thursday 4th March, I challenge you all to record a short clip (no longer than 1 minute) of you reading a book you love. You could use the myON website to find an exciting book to read aloud, or you could read a book you already have at home. Every child who takes part will receive a special World Book Day certificate, with 3 children from each class being chosen to win a reading prize! In your videos, I am looking for:

  • Reading fluency. Capture my interest with your words; readers whose stories flow are those who can read consistently and accurately and who speak clearly and confidently.

  • Lively expression. Bring the story to life and make me feel as if I am in the story with the characters! You could change the volume, pitch, tone and expression of your voice to capture the tone of the book.

  • Creativity. It’s entirely up to you how you choose to be creative with this task. It could involve dressing up, using actions or props to bring your story to life, reading in a particular place such as outside or anything else you can think of.

Your entries must be sent no later than Friday 5th March and winners will be announced the following week, Friday 12th March.

Title your email: RHPNS World Book Day followed by the child's full name and class for a chance to win one of our World Book Day prizes!

The Spark! Book Award

In addition to our 2 whole school reading competitions, we are taking part in a wider community reading celebration, the Spark! Book Awards. Educators and authors from across the Kingston and Richmond boroughs have collaborated in a search for the best children’s book. Authors submitted their books in the hopes of being chosen as the best, and after choosing from hundreds of books, they have been shortlisted to just 12. Now comes the exciting part - our children get to choose!

All of the books our staff read as part of the Masked Reader competition were Spark! Book nominations, and in school we will be exploring these books further with the children. On 10th June 2021, all children will have the chance to cast their vote to decide which one is truly the best. The winner will then be announced on 17th June 2021.

This is a fantastic opportunity for you to explore brand new and exciting books with your child and continue to support them with their learning as we head back into school.
